Give Em' Hell, Harry!

For the most part, I despise politicians. Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, Communist, Black Panther, whatever. None of these thieves and liars have our best interest at heart. Of course, I am talking about them collectively and not on an individual basis. I know there are a few diamonds in the rough, who have yet to sell their souls to the devil (special interests) and perhaps never will.

I know many people who feel the same as I do. Recently I have had a similar conversation with several people from all over the political spectrum and there is one thing that we have been able to agree upon: The world is ready now, more than ever for another Harry Truman. My grandma recently e-mailed me some facts about him that I thought I would share. They really illustrate the kind of man he was and why we will probably never have another like him.

Harry Truman was a different kind of President.  He probably made  as many important decisions regarding our nation's history as any of the other 42 Presidents. However, a measure of his greatness may rest on what he did after he left the White House.

The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in, which was in Independence Missouri . His wife had inherited the house from her mother and other than their years in the White House, they lived their entire lives there.

When he retired from office in 1952, his income was a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them, granted him an "allowance" and, later, a retroactive pension of $25,000 per year.

After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess drove home to Missouri by themselves. There were no Secret Service following them.

When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me. It belongs to the American people and it's not for sale."

Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."

As president he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.

Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while enjoying the fruits of their offices. Political offices are now for sale.

Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed, "My choices in life were either to be a piano player in a whore house or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference!

I say dig him up and clone him!!

The sad thing is that neither of the two main political parties would likely even allow someone like Truman to advance to the point of being a presidential candidate. Today, you have to know how to "play ball", shake the right hands and kiss the right butts. It's pathetic really. It should make us all sick or depressed, or perhaps most importantly, angry.

  1. You sure are right on target on this!! We now have politicians who take no thought for how the taxpayers money is spent. SPEND, SPEND, SPEND, and our local politicians have taken a page right out of the Washington DC book on how to usher the masses into bondage through fiscal irresponsibily!!!!

  2. Truman was a great one. I would not have wanted to be in his shoes when it was recommended to him to drop the atomic bomb twice!

  3. I don't buy into this whole "good ol' boys could do it better" metality. Politics is shaking hands, knowing the right people, and saying the right things. That's no different than trying to get things done in podunk Backwoodsburg. It's people like you who try to create a false dichotomy between real-people and politicians that are the real villians. Some will use their power to enrich themselves but to make such a broad generalization about all policiticians is plain ignorant. Using Congress to represent all politicians is like saying Jon and Kate represent all Americans. It's politotainment which is separate from actual day to day governing done by local-politicans and federal employees. diaf.

  4. My apologies Mr. or Ms. Anonymous, but my comments are not plain ignorant. They are, in fact, my own special brand of ignorance. Peace.

  6. I think it's just a metaphor for wanting someone to die slowly in horrible pain. Not just a fire, ya' know. Anything will work. Drowning, getting shot in the gut, bleeding out after falling in the shower. Anything will work. Oh, geez, I can't believe I almost forgot Cancer.

  7. Sorry CJ, you are obviously dealing with a pretentious idiot (8:28am)that thinks they 'know how things work'. Well, this slimeball- with no consideration for others- is the reason the world is in such a pickle so to speak. They think that shaking hands, knowing people..(in other words greasing palms, special interests, and porkbarreling) is where its at. These are the same jackasses that have our entire government in a stalemate because they think they are so brilliant and that the world is about them and what they want- not the collective nation. He obviously thought you meant him and took offense. My guess is he is a soul selling politician of some sort...My grandma always said "If the shoe fits..."
The John & Kate statement is also very revealing of the mentality you are dealing with. Don't let the losers get to you- they make you look good. Also, you are right about Truman- men with that kind of integrity are a rare jewel in today's world. Its a lot for today's politicians to live up to. Good thing he didn't diaf.

  8. Wow, you could not have missed my point more. You're "whole government in a stalemate" statement is the exact type of idiocy I'm talking about. Have the fire departments stopped putting out fires, have social security checks stopped going out, have repairs stopped being made by the DOT? You're life is positively affected everyday by "the Government" doing it's job. The United States Congress is not our "whole government". There are literally thousands of government employees and local politicians still doing what they do with integrity and purpose. My point is that you shouldn't make assumptions about the entire government based off of the Congress.

My secondary point is that the "idolization" of the American everyman is completely misplaced. Truman was a good man, forgetting for a moment that he killed hundred's of thousands of people, arguably unecessarily. But he was also smart, which can, sadly, not be said for the majority of Americans. That's why your buddy down at the bar would not make a good president. Because, most likely, that guy couldn't even find Afghanistan on a map. To further prove that most Americans are dumb watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJ3RrqBqk14

You seem to be able to write well and form coherent sentences, unlike most of the idiots on this blog. You should realize these things.

  9. Hey! That crosses a line buddy! You can say whatever you want about Chris, he's Chris... but why do you have to call us all idiots? What is wrong with you anyway? If we bring you down so much... stop reading and responding. Some of us are just trying to have fun, as is Chris. Stop taking yourself so seriously, its just a blog. It's not like anyone important reads it anyway. I mean it's Mr T, jello wrestling and good movie lines from Patrick Swazey Movies. So he puts in a few "serious" topics about Harry Truman and some stupid judge that doesn't know his head from his butt when it comes to race issues. We aren't solving the worlds problems here bud. Oh, and one more thing, it is pretty easy to call someone an idiot when you post anonymously.
